This weekend I had the opportunity to observe and photograph a Stand for America rally in Carmel, NY which was held by Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell. Numerous people turned out to support the rally which was a clear response to recent Trump v. The NFL tensions that have plagued the news cycles recently. Also in attendance was a small group of protestors offering support for anyone who chooses to kneel during the national anthem. Despite the differences of opinion the event went very smoothly with only a minor confrontation between a protestor and an overzealous supporter. Local and State police had a strong presence in order to dissuade either group from causing trouble.
It can be difficult to remain neutral and simply observe events like this one, especially as they are becoming more and more prevalent across the country. It is easy to see how people are making references to Nazi Germany when you are surrounded by dozens of people chanting “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!” after the national anthem is sung, as if daring anyone to question the greatness of the country. It is a subtly hostile mantra.
