With this series of photographs I am endeavoring to provide an intimate and honest view of how mental health and trauma affect people from all walks of life. The individuals portrayed in this series have come to me, opened themselves to me, and trusted me to share their stories accurately, without bias or exploitation. I want the viewer to see their vulnerability and courage – to understand that mental health is not just a headline to be discussed whenever someone’s mental or emotional struggle leads to an incomprehensible tragedy. Mental health affects us all in one form or another. My goal is to create authentic portraits that will connect with the viewer, to raise general awareness of the issues, and most importantly to raise the self-awareness of the viewer. The people here are more than a label or a diagnosis, they are a mirror to show the viewer that they are not alone. The COVID-19 Pandemic was a tremendously significant event for mental health across the globe, several individuals photographed for this project came to me as a result of the impacts of that pandemic.
